What is indoor air quality and how is it related to your air conditioning system?
Our air conditioners are designed to create comfort in our homes. The air gets circulated throughout the house to create the desired temperature (what you set your thermostat to). A good and efficient system will maintain your home temperature constant at what you set the thermostat to. A less efficient system will turn itself on and off throughout the day to reach the desired temperature. But air circulation is only one part of your indoor air comfort and air quality. Another major key to air quality is your Air Filtration System and humidity control.
The filtration system consists of multiple variables. One of these is your air filters. There are many types, shapes and sizes available, and each home will be different. The basic filters can be purchased almost anywhere. Some are cheap and simple, while others claim to protect you from certain allergens and bacteria. This depends on the microns (one micron = one-millionth of a meter) rating. There are different filter rating systems out there. Most common are; CADR, MERV, MPR and FPR. The higher the rating, the more protection it supposed to give you against small particles. We are not going into details on the specific rating systems, but what is important to understand is the particle size differences. If a Filter manufacturer claims to be able to trap particles the size of 7 microns, we know that they are useless for bacteria and viruses which are normally in the range of 0.3 to 5 microns.

Humidity

The best level of humidity for your home, for best comfort and to avoid any possible bacteria from developing seems to be between 45-50%. A humidifier and a dehumidifier can help you achieve this level of humidity in your house.
