The convention floors get so big they feel like small airports. Engineers huddle over spec sheets like they're reading tea leaves. And somewhere between the espresso stands and the badge scanners, the next few years of home technology quietly start taking shape.

ACCA Conference & Expo (March 15 to 18) brought contractors and installers together to talk shop about the reality of putting all this new tech into real homes.
And the National HVACR Education Conference (March 22 to 25) wrapped up the spring stretch, focused on training the technicians who actually climb into attics and crawlspaces to make it all work.

Big names like Daikin, Carrier, and Trane used the show to unveil refreshed heat pump and chiller lineups, built from the ground up around these lower global warming potential refrigerants. What's genuinely exciting isn't just the chemistry though, it's the engineering built around it. These new units come with built in leak sensors and automatic ventilation systems, basically giving the equipment its own nervous system. Heat Pumps Go Semiconductor - The Rise of GaN
Maybe the most technically thrilling development this year came from gallium nitride, or GaN. It's a semiconductor material most people know from fast charging phone bricks, not from keeping houses warm. That's changing fast. GaN based power electronics are now showing up in outdoor heat pump units at scale for the first time, and the results read like a wish list for anyone who's lived through a brutal winter.
These new inverter compressors can hold their efficiency at temperatures as low as 25 degrees below zero Celsius, while shrinking the power board itself by 30 to 40 percent. Over at KBIS and IBS, plumbing had its own moment in the spotlight, and it came from the most everyday fixture in the house, the faucet. Brands like Moen and Kohler showed off premium residential and commercial faucets that don't need any wiring and don't need batteries either. Instead, tiny hydraulic micro turbines built right into the fixture generate power straight from the flow of water passing through it, quietly running the electronic valves and leak sensors on board.

And it wasn't just faucets. Plenty of booths at KBIS were showing off smart leak detection built straight into shutoff valves, water heaters, and even under sink connectors, all quietly watching for the kind of slow drip that usually turns into a flooded kitchen. Water efficient fixtures got some attention too, with a few brands promising the same water pressure homeowners love, just using noticeably less water to get there. Ductwork Gets a Brain - AI Balanced Zoning
Finally, in one of the more forward looking demos of the season, several exhibitors showed off seamless zoning systems that rely on continuous static pressure sensors paired with machine learning algorithms. Their job is to keep airflow balanced across a home's zones, and stop the whistling, banging, and cavitation that's long plagued multi zone duct systems whenever certain rooms get shut off.
It's a subtle upgrade, but a telling one. Even the ductwork hidden behind your walls is becoming part of the bigger smart home conversation now, quietly adjusting itself in real time instead of waiting on a technician to fine tune it by hand.
